We know from the ‘top ten’ list of baby names that names come in an out of fashion. The wigs and gowns that are worn in court were ‘all the go’ at the time they were introduced. Yes. You are right. Fashion moves slowly in the legal world so news of a big change is big news.
On 1 December 2022, the Lord Chief Justice announced that how we address the judge in court will change. There is a whole webpage dedicated to how each different level of judge is to be addressed. You can have a look HERE.
There will still be times when we will be using ‘My Lord’ or ‘My Lady’ and ‘Your Honour’ but we will far more often be using ‘Judge’ instead of ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’. This is big news and a big change.
