I was happy to help with this investigation for the BBC. It really does hammer home that if you are facing a legal issue, you need to find a qualified, regulated, insured legal professional. Many solicitors will offer an initial reduced rate advice session (we do) so that you can have some basic legal advice. It will at least give you a starting point.
The Law Society has records of regulated solicitors so you can be sure if someone says they are a solicitor, they really are. You can use their ‘Find A Solicitor’ search function to find someone near you dealing in the area of law in which you need advice.
If you are worried about costs, speak to your solicitor. Explain your worries and ask them for suggestions about how to manage costs. There might be parts of the work that you can do to help.
